A Children’s Entertainer Shares 6 Behind the Scenes Secrets
As children’s entertainers, we often get asked how we manage to keep kids engaged, calm tantrums, and perform with boundless energy. Children’s parties are magical affairs, filled with laughter, excitement, and a touch of wonder. But what goes on behind the scenes to make these events seamless and memorable? Today, we’re pulling back the curtain to share six secrets that make the magic happen. Whether you’re planning a party or just curious about the craft, these insights reveal the dedication and fun behind the scenes.
1. Preparation is Key
One of the biggest secrets to a successful children’s event is preparation. Entertainers don’t just show up and wing it – we plan meticulously. From knowing the age group of the children attending to understanding the event’s theme, preparation is everything.
Before any event, we ensure that we know what we will be doing during that specific booking, pack all of the equipment and supplies needed, and, of course, get into costume. We even run through backup plans in case of unexpected surprises (because in the world of kids, anything can happen!). Having a structure in place ensures smooth transitions and keeps the energy levels balanced throughout the party.
2. The Power of Character
Children believe in the magic of characters. Whether it’s a princess, superhero, or one of our beloved seasonal characters, staying in character from the moment we arrive until the final goodbye is crucial. This immersion creates an unforgettable experience for kids and makes the event feel real.
A significant part of our training involves practicing how to embody these characters – from voice modulation to body language. The moment we break character, the illusion is shattered, so we stay committed to the role, even when chatting with parents. It’s all about fostering a world of imagination that captivates the young audience. Our team all come from a variety of performing backgrounds, meaning this is second nature to them!

3. Engaging the Shy and the Bold
At any children’s party, you’ll encounter a mix of personalities – from outgoing stars of the show to quieter, more reserved kids. A skilled entertainer knows how to balance attention and ensure everyone feels included.
For shy children, we use softer approaches, often inviting them to participate in small ways without putting them on the spot. For the energetic ones, interactive games and challenges help channel their excitement. This delicate balancing act creates an inclusive atmosphere where every child feels valued and engaged.
4. The Art of Distraction
Meltdowns happen, but one of the hidden talents of a children’s entertainer is the ability to distract and redirect. If a child is upset, entertainers have a toolkit of tricks designed to shift their focus quickly.
Having a few go-to distraction techniques can diffuse tense moments and ensure the party continues without disruption. Our assistants are also instrumental in building relationships with our party guests, and being on hand to help any who are feeling some big feelings to ensure that our performers can keep entertaining the party as a whole.
5. High-Energy Performance with Built-in Breaks
Performing for children requires a lot of energy, but the trick is to pace it. High-energy games are often followed by calmer activities like storytelling or crafts. This approach means our guests aren’t too tired out, or amped up, and ensures that there are activities for everyone.
By alternating between energetic and quieter moments, we can keep the kids engaged without exhausting them or ourselves. This balance helps maintain attention spans and prevents the event from becoming overwhelming.

6. Post-Event Reflection
After the excitement settles, professional entertainers take time to reflect on the event. What worked well? What could be improved? Each performance serves as a learning experience to refine and enhance future events.
Continued training is also so important to us; every entertainer will complete a rigorous training programme before their first event, and continue to undertake refresher training and continued character training throughout their time with us to ensure that we all deliver the same high quality. Being a children’s entertainer isn’t just about dressing up and performing – it’s about creating memories that last a lifetime. By blending preparation, performance skills, and a touch of magic, we craft experiences that children and parents cherish.
The next time you see a character bringing joy to a party, know that behind that costume is someone dedicated to making the day extraordinary. If you’re planning an event, remember – a little behind-the-scenes magic goes a long way!
